The Big Brother: A Story of Indian War by George Cary Eggleston

SKU: 6235989715712

In the quiet days of peace and security in which we live it is difficult to imagine such a time of excitement as that at which our story opens, in the summer of 1813. From the beginning of that year, the Creek Indians in Alabama and Mississippi had shown a decided disposition to become hostile. In addition to the usual incentives to war which always exist where the white settlements border closely upon Indian territory, there were several special causes operating to bring about a struggle at that time. We were already at war with the British, and British agents were very active in stirring up trouble on our frontiers, knowing that nothing would so surely weaken the Americans as a general outbreak of Indian hostilities. Tecumseh, the great chief, had visited the Creeks, too, and had urged them to go on the war path, threatening them, in the event of their refusal, with the wrath of the Great Spirit. His appeals to their superstition were materially strengthened by the occurrence of an earthquake, which singularly enough, he had predicted, threatening that when he returned to his home he would stamp his foot and shake their houses down. Their own prophets, Francis and Singuista, had preached war, too, telling the Indians that their partial adoption of civilization, and their relations of friendship with the whites, were sorely displeasing to the Great Spirit, who would surely punish them if they did not immediately abandon the civilization and butcher the pale-faces. Francis predicted, also, that in the coming struggle no Indians would be killed, while the whites would be completely exterminated. All this was promised on condition that the Indians should become complete savages again, quitting all the habits of industry and thrift which they had been learning for some years past, and fighting mercilessly against all whites, sparing none.

The Big Fisherman by Lloyd C. Douglas

Lloyd C. Douglas’s 1948 novel ‘The Big Fisherman’ is an engaging fictional work on christian history. “It was a calm, early summer noon in the southern mountains of Arabia. The Big Leap by Charles E. Fritch

SKU: 6235989716077

It did not terrify Cantrell to know he was up so high and going so fast, going higher and faster than any human before him. He would be up even higher the next day, he remembered, going so high and so fast he would not come down again.

It would be a shame to leave Earth, he knew. There was security in her firmness, with no great space underfoot through which to drop down, down, down. Up here there was emptiness all around. Emptiness and, except for the dull throb of the rocket engines, silence. Out there—he looked up—there would be a greater emptiness, a greater silence, an infinity of nothingness in all directions.

The Biography of Satan by Kersey Graves

SKU: PP-02020-0003-49

In presenting the present edition of this work to the public the author deems it necessary only to add in the preface that it has been thoroughly revised and corrected, and that the numerous responses from those who availed themselves of a copy of the previous edition of the book, leaves the author no reason to doubt that the motive which actuated him in the publication of it will be fully realized. That motive was to expose and arrest the progress of the most terror-inciting superstition that ever nestled in the bosom of the ignorant, or that ever prostrated the energies of the human mind, and reduced its possessor to the condition of an abject, groveling and trembling slave!

The Birch and the Star, and Other Stories by Moe and Topelius

SKU: 6235989715296

The realistic stories in this book, given for the first time to American children, were written in the Norwegian by Jörgen Moe and in the Swedish by Zacharias Topelius. Both authors have won fame in their native lands as writers of juvenile literature. Their works show sincere sympathy with child life and great power to interpret it artistically.

Children need the realistic story side by side with the purely imaginative fairy tale, for the story true to human experience serves to bring about a proper balance between the ideas created by a world of fancy and those of the world of reality.

The Birds by Aristophanes

SKU: 6235989716309

The Birds’ differs markedly from all the other Comedies of Aristophanes which have come down to us in subject and general conception. It is just an extravaganza pure and simple—a graceful, whimsical theme chosen expressly for the sake of the opportunities it afforded of bright, amusing dialogue, pleasing lyrical interludes, and charming displays of brilliant stage effects and pretty dresses. Unlike other plays of the same Author, there is here apparently no serious political MOTIF underlying the surface burlesque and buffoonery.

The Black Bitch and Other Stories by P. Raja

SKU: 9788184303377

The Black Bitch and Other Stories, a collection of twenty three short stories, presents a kaleidoscope of strange sights and impressions that P. Raja observed and felt. He crafts his stories in such a way that life appears in his short stories in all its vastness and mystery. He writes with no trace of false modesty. The real-life incidents that sneak in are always the things that disturb us enough to wind their way into the space of P. Raja’s stories. True, our daily lives are mostly a mixture of drab routine and unpleasant surprises. However, from time to time, something unexpected happens, which makes life worth living. This is precisely what P. Raja’s stories portray. He inhabits a very familiar cosmos and his stories almost always bubble with a socio-cultural undercurrent. He always thinks of people and places familiar to him because that is his own experiential base. Rarely do some stories chart an unknown territory and the reader simply journeys with a certain lesser known reality where ghosts are staring us in the face. His stories, his words, the wonderful characters, offer us the surprise, the excitement, the sense of wonder that kindle the fire of human imagination.
Collection of must read heart touching stories.

The Blue-Grass Region of Kentucky, and Other Kentucky Articles by James Lane Allen

SKU: 9788184306075

“It was his plan that with each descriptive article should go a short story dealing with the same subject, and this plan was in part wrought out. Thus, with the article entitled “Uncle Tom at Home” goes the tale entitled “Two Gentlemen of Kentucky;” and with the article entitled “A Home of the Silent Brotherhood” goes the tale entitled “The White Cowl.” In the same way, there were to be short stories severally dealing with the other subjects embraced in this volume. But having in part wrought out this plan, the author has let it rest—not finally, perhaps, but because in the mean time he has found himself engaged with other themes.” -Preface

The Boats of the Glen Carrig by William Hope Hodgson

SKU: PP-02020-0003-72

Primarily a survival and adventure story with elements of horror, in the form of monsters, The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” is written in an archaic style, and is presented as a true account, written in 1757, of events occurring earlier. The narrator is a passenger who was traveling on the ship Glen Carrig, which was lost at sea when it struck “a hidden rock”. The story is about the adventures of the survivors, who escaped the wreck in two lifeboats.

If a man is not eager for adventure at the age of twenty-two, the enticement of romantic possibilities will never come to him.

The chairman of the Ukraine Oil Company looked with a little amusement at the young man who sat on the edge of a chair by the chairman’s desk, and noted how the eye of the youth had kindled at every fresh discouragement which the chairman had put forward. Enthusiasm, reflected the elder man, was one of the qualities which were most desirable in the man who was to accept the position which Malcolm Hay was at that moment considering.

If you do not pack up and take to the woods within three days from the receipt of this notice, I will not answer for the consequences. Your brain is slowly but surely giving way. Your batteries are becoming exhausted and must be renewed if measurable currents are to be expected. I recommend new cells, rather than recharging from a dynamo. Get busy now.

The Book of Life by Upton Sinclair

SKU: 6235989715075

The writer of this book has been in this world some forty-two years. That may not seem long to some, but it is long enough to have made many painful mistakes, and to have learned much from them. Looking about him, he sees others making these same mistakes, suffering for lack of that same knowledge which he has so painfully acquired. This being the case, it seems a friendly act to offer his knowledge, minus the blunders and the pain.

The Book of Princes and Princesses by Mrs. Lang

SKU: 9788184307238

All the stories about Princes and Princesses in this book are true stories, and were written by Mrs. Lang, out of old books of history. There are some children who make life difficult by saying, first that stories about fairies are true, and that they like fairies; and next that they do not like true stories about real people, who lived long ago. I am quite ready to grant that there really are such things as fairies, because, though I never saw a fairy, any more than I have seen the little animals which lecturers call molecules and ions, still I have seen people who have seen fairies—truthful people. Now I never knew a lecturer who ventured to say that he had seen an ion or a molecule. It is well known, and written in a true book, that the godmother of Joan of Arc had seen fairies, and nobody can suppose that such a good woman would tell her godchild what was not true—for example, that the squire of the parish was in love with a fairy and used to meet her in the moonlight beneath a beautiful tree. In fact, if we did not believe in fairy stories, who would care to read them? Yet only too many children dislike to read true stories, because the people in them were real, and the things actually happened.

The Book of Snobs by William Thackeray

SKU: 9788184306353

“We have all read a statement—we have all, I say, been favoured by perusing a remark, that when the times and necessities of the world call for a Man, that individual is found. Thus at the French Revolution, when it was requisite to administer a corrective dose to the nation, Robespierre was found; a most foul and nauseous dose indeed, and swallowed eagerly by the patient, greatly to the latter’s ultimate advantage: thus, when it became necessary to kick John Bull out of America, Mr. Washington stepped forward, and performed that job to satisfaction: thus, when the Earl of Aldborough was unwell, Professor Holloway appeared with his pills, and cured his lordship, as per advertisement, &c. &c.. Numberless instances might be adduced to show that when a nation is in great want, the relief is at hand; just as in the Pantomime where when CLOWN wants anything—a warming-pan, a pump-handle, a goose, or a lady’s tippet—a fellow comes sauntering out from behind the side-scenes with the very article in question.” -Preface

The Boy and His Gang by J. Adams Puffer

SKU: 6235989716250

Sixty-six boys who were members of gangs are responsible for this book. They told me the stories of their gang life and I wrote them out in the form illustrated in Chapter II. I showed these stories to President G. Stanley Hall, who asked me to present them in the Pedagogical Seminary, where an article appeared in June, 1905. These original stories of Boys’ Gangs and Boy Leaders later became the basis for a series of lectures on Boy Problems. In revising my material for book publication, many interesting criticisms by parents, teachers, and social workers, in various sections of the country have been consciously or unconsciously incorporated into it. I have found a wide interest in and demand for such a book as this—bearing upon the group psychology of boyhood—and a lamentable scarcity of readable literature on the subject.

The campfire for ages has been the place of council and friendship and story-telling. The mystic glow of the fire quickens the mind, warms the heart, awakens memories of happy, glowing tales that fairly leap to the lips. The Boy Scouts of America has incorporated the “campfire” in its program for council and friendship and story-telling. In one volume, the Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories makes available to scoutmasters and other leaders a goodly number of stories worthy of their attention, and when well told likely to arrest and hold the interest of boys in their early teens, when “stirs the blood—to bubble in the veins.”

The Boy Travellers in the Far East Part Third by Thomas Wallace Knox

SKU: 6235989715812

This volume completes the series of “The Boy Travellers in the Far East.” It attempts to describe Ceylon and India, together with Borneo, the Philippine Islands, and Burmah, in the same manner that the preceding volumes gave an account of Japan, China, Siam, Java, Cochin-China, Cambodia, and the Malay Archipelago.
Frank and Fred have continued their journey under the guidance of Doctor Bronson, and the plan of their travels is identical with that previously followed. The words of the last preface may be repeated in this: “The incidents of the narrative were mainly the experiences of the author at a recent date; and the descriptions of countries, cities, temples, people, manners, and customs are nearly all from his personal observations and notes. He has endeavored to give a faithful account of Ceylon, India, Burmah, and the Philippine Islands as they appear to-day, and trusts that the only fiction of the book is in the names of the individuals who tell the story.”

The Boy Travellers in the Far East, Part Fifth by Thomas Wallace Knox

SKU: 6235989715815

The method followed in the preparation of the preceding volumes of the series of the Boy Travellers has been observed in the present book, as far as it was possible to do so. Though the author has visited several parts of Africa, he has never made a journey to the Equatorial Regions of the Dark Continent; consequently he has been placed under greater obligations to other writers than in his preceding works, and the personal experiences of Frank and Fred in Central Africa were not those of the compiler of the narrative. But he has endeavored to maintain the vividness of the story by the introduction of incidents drawn from many books of African travel and exploration; he has sought to confine fiction to the narrowest bounds, and to construct an account of travel and adventure that should be true in every respect save in the individual characters portrayed.

The Boy Travellers in The Russian Empire by Thomas Wallace Knox

The Boy’s Book of New Inventions by Harry E. Maule

SKU: 9788184306153

“IN THE preparation of this book the author has tried to give an interesting account of the invention and workings of a few of the machines and mechanical processes that are making the history of our time more wonderful and more dramatic than that of any other age since the world began. For heroic devotion to science in the face of danger and the scorn of their fellowmen, there is no class who have made a better record than inventors. Most inventions, too, are far more than scientific calculation, and it is the human story of the various factors in this great age of invention that is here set forth for boy readers.” -Preface

Six years ago a Royal Commission, under the presidency of Lord Hartington, was known to be inquiring into the administration of the national defence. There was much talk in the newspapers about the Prussian staff, and many were the advocates of its imitation in this country. Very few of those who took part in the discussions seemed to know what the Prussian staff was, and I thought it might be useful to the Royal Commission and to the public to have a true account of that institution, written in plain English, so that any one could understand it. The essay was published on the 11th of February, 1890, the day on which the Report of Lord Hartington’s Commission was signed.

The Brain, A Decoded Enigma by Dorin Teodor Moisa

SKU: 6235989716225

As any scientific theory, it is a symbolic model. Any symbolic model is based on a limited number of basic terms and a limited number of basic relations between the basic terms.

For the basic terms and only for them, there are accepted descriptive definitions. All the others terms are generated by the model, together with their normal definitions. These definitions are generated by the model by logical and mathematical procedures.

These are the basic characteristics of any scientific theory and so, I follow the procedures described above, to make a theory on the basic hardware functions of the brain.

This theory is in a total opposition with all the actual sciences associated with the functions of the brain. The present sciences, associated with the functions of the brain, are not based on a single fundamental model. In this way, as my theory will be accepted, all what it was already written in the actual sciences associated with the functions of the brain, have to be re-written or forgotten.

The Break Up by Vijayendra Haryal

SKU: 9788184301335

This book attempts in right earnest to take you through the pursuit of love and its various ‘interpretations’ by means of 21 short stories and 7 poems. You may identify yourself with a character, either in full or part, in a story or may be many stories. You may smile, laugh, cry, rejoice and be one with your inner self. Or you may just shrug it off as ‘cheesy’ and ‘childish’! Whatever may be the case, I believe, it will be an ‘amusing’ experience.
Emotions are what make us human, and life worth living. Love of all, is proclaimed to be the purest. With patience dwindling fast and faith fading away, bonds for a life-time are broken in just a few months or even in a matter of days, more frequently than ever before. The story ‘The Break Up’ is a mirror to the guy and gal ‘interpreting’ relationship differently and then breaking up. Beside this story, you may find in some stories, a glimpse of love which goes beyond just a ‘guy’ and ‘gal’ relationship. A sincere effort is aimed at bringing out a ‘holistic’ view of the emotion.
