The Oresteia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus concerning the end of the curse on the House of Atreus. The name derives from the character Orestes, who sets out to avenge his father’s murder. The only extant example of an ancient Greek theater trilogy, the Oresteia won first prize at the Dionysia festival in 458 BC. When originally performed, it was accompanied by Proteus, a satyr play that would have followed the trilogy. Proteus has not survived, however. In all likelihood the term “Oresteia” originally referred to all four plays; today it generally designates only the surviving trilogy. Many consider the Oresteia to be Aeschylus’ finest work. पंचतत्त्वों से बने हर मानव शरीर में अग्नि का वास है, कहीं कम, कहीं ज्यादा। इसलिए यदि ‘अग्नि-राग’ की दीपिका अपनी नन्ही सी लौ से अन्य रेप-पीडि़ताओं के अँधेरे जीवन को प्रकाशमान करने का उद्यम करती है, तो उसके इस संकल्प और साहस को नमन करने का जी चाहता है। ‘अग्नि-राग’ इसी संवेदना का उपन्यास है।

Not for the squeamish or for children, these folk-tales are from the Ainu, the somewhat mysterious indigenous people of Japan, thousands of whom still live in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Ranging over all of the usual themes of folklore, from creation to marriage to war, these stories have a pungent, ribald frankness concerning all aspects of human life that offended their scholarly collector Basil Hall Chamberlain (his apologies to the reader are themselves entertaining) but that make them fresh, provocative, and amusing to the twenty-first century reader. Attention to the Ainu is especially timely because of the revival in Japan of Ainu activism on behalf of indigenous rights, pride, and culture, but are well worth reading for their purely entertainment value.

रॉबर्ट कार्सटेयर्स, आइसीएस लिखित उपन्यास ‘हाड़माज विलेज’ का प्रकाशन 1935 में हुआ था। वर्तमान झारखंड के संताल परगना प्रमंडल अंतर्गत आमड़ापाड़ा और लिटिपाड़ा प्रखंडों के वास्तविक गाँवों के वास्तविक पात्रों को लेकर रचा गया यह उपन्यास 1855 में हुए ‘हूल’ का आँखों देखा हाल वर्णन करता प्रतीत होता है। उपन्यास में वर्णित गाँव आज भी अस्तित्व में हैं और समुदाय के उन नायकों को अब भी श्रद्धा से याद किया जाता है, जिन्होंने स्वाधीनता के लिए प्राण न्योछावर कर दिए। कार्सटेयर्स 1885 से 1898 तक संताल परगना जिला के डिप्टी कमिश्नर के रूप में लगभग 13 वर्षों तक दुमका में पदस्थापित रहे। आर.आर.के. किस्कू रापाज द्वारा रोमन लिपि संताली में अनूदित इस महत्त्वपूर्ण दस्तावेजी उपन्यास का प्रकाशन 1946 में ‘हाड़मावाक् आतो’ नाम से हुआ था। इसी संताली संस्करण का हिंदी अनुवाद है—’ऐसे हुआ हूल’ ।
वस्तुत: कार्सटेयर्स ने यह उपन्यास लिखा ही इसलिए होगा, ताकि वह अपने कार्य-स्थल की वास्तविक स्थितियों से अपने देशवासियों तथा अंग्रेजी के वैसे भारतीय पाठकों को परिचित करा सके, जो आदिवासियों, विशेषकर संताल आदिवासियों की जीवन-शैली, उनके आचार-व्यवहार, रीति-रिवाज और स्वाधीनता प्रेमी चरित्र के प्रति अनभिज्ञ थे।
Aitreya-Aranyaka Upanishad
The word Upanishad (upa-ni-shad) consists of, “Upa” means “near;” “ni” means “down;” “shad” means “to sit.” Thus, Upanishad is to sit down near the teacher to discuss, learn, practice, and experience. There are some 200 or more Upanishads. Some are lost and are only known about because of being referenced in other Upanishads. Most of the Upanishads were kept secret for centuries, only passed on to others orally in the form of Shlokas (a category of verse line developed from the Vedic Anustubh meter). Aryanka (Snskrit) ?????? means means pertaining to the forest. Aranyaka refers to a treatise to be read or expounded by anchorites in the quiet of the forest. Some Upanishads are incorporated inside Aranyakas. The subjects treated by Aranyakas are, in general, liturgical whereas the Upanishads are philosophical. The Aitareya-Aranyaka consists of three Aryankas. The first Aranyaka is purely liturgical, giving a description of the Mahavrata ritual. The second and third Aranyankas consist of the Mahaitareya Upanishad, while the Upanishad generally known as Aitareya Upanishad comprises 4th, 5th, and 6th adhyayas of the second Aranyaka. The date of Aitareya Upanishad is not known but has been estimated by scholars to be sometime around 6th or 5th century BCE. The 11 principal Upanishads to which Sankara appeals in his great commentary on the Vedanta-Surtras are: Chandogya, Talavakara or Kena, Aitareya, Kaushitaki, Vajasaneyi or Isha, Katha, Mundaka, Taittirtiyaka or Taittiriya, Brihadaranyaka, Svetasvatara, and Prasna. They are also called the 11 classical Upanishads or the fundamental Upanishads of the Vedanta Philosophy. Apart from these, Maitrayana-Brahmana-Upanishad is also considered as an important Upanishad. The Upanishadic literature is not a religious scripture and is free from dogma and doctrines. It is not a part of any religion but is a philosophy for all times and for all. Ajax is a Greek tragedy written in the 5th century BC. The date of Ajax’s first performance is unknown and may never be found, but most scholars regard it as an early work, c. 450 – 430 BC. It chronicles the fate of the warrior Ajax after the events of the Iliad, but before the end of the Trojan War. At the onset of the play, Ajax is enraged because Achilles’ armor was awarded to Odysseus, rather than to him. He vows to kill the Greek leaders who disgraced him. Before he can enact his extraordinary revenge, though, he is tricked by the goddess Athena into believing that the sheep and cattle that were taken by the Achaeans as spoil are the Greek leaders. कुशीनगर (देवरिया) में सन् 1911 में जन्म। पहले बारह वर्ष की शिक्षा पिता (डॉ. हीरानंद शास्त्री) की देख-रेख में घर ही पर। आगे की पढ़ाई मद्रास और लाहौर में। एम.ए. अंग्रेजी में प्रवेश, किंतु तभी देश की आजादी के लिए एक गुप्त क्रांतिकारी संगठन में शामिल होना। शिक्षा में बाधा तथा सन् ’30 में बम बनाने के आरोप में गिरफ्तारी। जेल में रहकर ‘चिंता’ और ‘शेखर : एक जीवनी’ की रचना। क्रमशः सन् ’36-37 में ‘सैनिक’, ‘विशाल भारत’ का संपादन। सन् ’43 से ’46 तक ब्रिटिश सेना में भर्ती। सन् ’47-50 तक ऑल इंडिया रेडियो में काम। सन् ’43 में ‘तार सप्तक’ का प्रवर्तन और संपादन। क्रमशः दूसरे, तीसरे, चौथे सप्तक का संपादन। ‘प्रतीक’, ‘दिनमान’, ‘नवभारत टाइम्स’, ‘वाक्’, ‘एवरीमैन’ पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के संपादन से पत्रकारिता में नए प्रतिमानों की सृष्टि।
देश-विदेश की अनेक यात्राएँ, जिनसे भारतीय सभ्यता की सूक्ष्म पहचान और पकड़, विदेश में भारतीय साहित्य और संस्कृति का अध्यापन। कई राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मानों से सम्मानित, जिनमें ‘भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ’ सन् ’79, यूगोस्लाविया का अंतरराष्ट्रीय कविता सम्मान ‘गोल्डन रीथ’ सन् ’83 भी शामिल। सन् ’80 से वत्सल निधि के संस्थापन और संचालन के माध्यम से साहित्य और संस्कृति के बोध निर्माण में कई नए प्रयोग।

कई दशक से व्यापक और चर्चित सवाल ‘आरक्षण’ पर तरहतरह के सवाल, सुझाव, शिकायतें और भोग; कहीं आरक्षण से उपजी कुंठा, कहीं निश्चितता; कभी नौकरशाही द्वारा रिश्वत की माँग से आरक्षण के बावजूद नौकरी का न मिल पाना। ऐसे में अति दलित का बद से बदतर होते जाना एक भयावह समस्या है। शराबी पति से पिटती पत्नियाँ, दो वक्त की रोटी के लिए लुटती अस्मिता, जिसका उन्हें नैतिक ज्ञान भी नहीं। मानसिक रूप से गुलाम, वैचारिक दृष्टि से विकलांग, जीवित लाश सा जीवन का भार ढोते वाल्मीकि समाज में चेतना की कमी रही। इसी चेतना को व्यापक रूप देने का प्रयास है यह उपन्यास।
उपन्यास का नायक भोला दलित वाल्मीकि समाज से है। परिस्थितियों की शिकार उसकी माँ है, परिस्थितियों से समझौता करती बहन है और परिस्थितियों का लाभ उठाकर तरक्की का रास्ता पाते ही जातिसमाज को अलविदा कहनेवाला भाई है। मूलभूत जरूरतों को पूरा करने की जद्दोजहद में कभी भूख और कभी अपमान से तिलतिल मरता उसका समाज है।
भोला के पास संघर्ष है, वित्तविहीन, संसाधनविहीन, समर्थन की क्षीण संभावनाओं के साथ अपने समाज को नई दिशा देने के सपने हैं। इस उपन्यास को पढ़कर एक भी वाल्मीकि जागरूक होता है तो एकएक करके कारवाँ स्वतः बनता चला जाएगा। तब इस उपन्यास का लेखन सार्थक हो जाएगा।
